This is a special immigration program designed to meet the shortage of live-in caregivers (nannies) in Canada.

Live-in Caregivers are individuals who are qualified to provide care for children, elderly persons or persons with disabilities in private homes without supervision. Live-in caregivers must live in the private home where they work in Canada. Both the employer and the employee must follow several steps to meet the requirements of the Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP). The Live-in Caregiver Program (LCP) allows applicants to apply for permanent residence from within Canada after being employed full-time as a live-in caregiver for at least 24 months or a total of 3,900 hours in a minimum of 22 months within the four years immediately following their entry into Canada under the LCP.

The Eligibility criteria to become live-in caregivers in Canada:

  • Successful completion of high school education that is equivalent in Canada
  • You must have at least six months of full-time training or 12 months of experience in a field or occupation related to caregivers.
  • The applicant may have received training or gained experience in some of the areas such as early childhood education, geriatric care, pediatric nursing or first aid etc.
  • The applicant must be able to speak, read and understand either English or French.

About live-in caregiver program process:

Canada has recently made a few changes to this program. Currently the live-in caregiver program is closed to new applicants. Employer can only hire a caregiver through this program only if they have:

  • Found a caregiver who already has a work permit in the Live-in Caregiver Program and who is looking for a new employer
  • Been approved for a LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment) that shows the caregiver has agreed to live in at the employer’s home.

Other options for employers to hire a foreign caregiver is through the:


  • Home Child Care Provider or Home Support Workers pilot. No LMIA is required for these pilots.
  • Temporary Foregin Worker Program. Employer should get a positive LMIA from Service Canada and the caregiver must apply for a regular work permit.
